Stiftsgården

Stiftsgården is the royal residence in Trondheim. It was built in 1774 by Cecilie Christine Schøller, a wealthy widow who had inherited the property from her father, General Johan Friedrich Frølich. When her wealthy merchant-husband died, she inherited his fortune and decided to build a palace in the centre of the city. She often travelled abroad, and rarely got to use the palace before she died in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1786. The palace was inherited by her grandson after her death, who in 1800, sold it to the government. Stiftsgården is still one of the largest wooden buildings in northern Europe, and has been the setting for many royal visits and other festivities throughout the years.
