Leiv Eriksson

Leiv Eriksson is an important symbol of ethnic pride Americans of Nordic heritage. According to the Saga of Olav Tryggvason, Leiv sailed out from Trondheim harbor for his historic voyage to Vinland, now known as North America, in the year 1000. This saga was written by Snorre Sturlasson in approximately 1230-1240. August Werner designed the original of this statue for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The Leif Eriksson Society of Seattle gave this replica to the city of Trondheim in 1997 to honor the thousand year anniversaries of the founding of Trondheim and Leiv Eriksson's voyage to America.

This statue has a very proud expression on its face, pretty cool. Does that mean he also "found" Americas?
Leiv Eriksson is considered to be the first European to set foot in America. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared October 9th "Leiv Erikson Day" in the United States. The date is not believed to be associated with any particular event in his life, but is the date when the ship "Restauration" arrived in New York in 1825 at the start of the first organized immigration from Norway to the U.S.
Alexander,
I thought I recognized this statue! Of course, the original is right here in the neighborhood in which I live in Seattle. Nice to know there is a replica linking these two cities. In my neighborhood (called Ballard) most of the original homeowners were Scandinavian, especially Norwegians, who built the fishing industry here. Close by my home is the Nordic Heritage Musium which I very much enjoy visiting to see contemporary art from Norway, Sweeden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. Even the grocery stores in this neighborhood display all the Scandinavian flags.

Interesante. Había leido anteriormente las Saga de Olav Tryggvason, pero no sabía de la importancia que tiene actualmente Leiv Eriksson.
SALUDOS, Bye.
